Several roosters have found their way to Hen Harbor. They keep careful watch over the hens and are an important part of the Hen Harbor community.

Unwanted roosters are an unfortunate artifact of the backyard chicken trend. Because 10% of all chicks sold as female are actually baby roosters, people who purchase chicks from hatcheries expecting them to grow into egg-laying hens frequently end up with one or several roosters. Most of these roosters end up being killed owing to zoning ordinances, and because most sanctuaries are already beyond capacity for roosters.
